The Island of Elba is connected to the mainland by four shipping companies: Toremar, Blunavy, Moby Lines and Elba Ferries, which operate daily services between the ports of Piombino and Portoferraio. The journey takes just one hour to cover the approximately 10 km separating the island from the mainland, reaching the ports of Portoferraio and Rio Marina. There is also a fast hydrofoil service for passengers only, which takes just 20 minutes to reach Cavo, a hamlet of Rio Marina, and then continues on to Portoferraio, where the journey ends after another 15 minutes.
